Habits & The Culture of Health

In the spirit of creating a culture of health, i knew habits would be fundamentally important. The self awareness gift that only humans possible, we have the ability to assess our very thought processes, and actions that follow the choices we make. Henry David Theora said I know of no more encouraging fact than the understandable ability of man to elevate his life by conscious en-devour. I could not agree with him more, Isn’t it exciting that we have the power to choose how we act/respond.

I have been reading Stephen Coveys’ book, The 7 habits of highly effective people, He defined habits as The intersection of knowledge, skill and desire. Knowledge is the theoretical paradigm, skill is the how to do and desire is the motivation. In order to make something a habit we have to have all three. We must be a people that look up their symptoms on google less than we read up on how to improve our health. As we grow in knowledge and practice, so will our skill. I see our desire as our ‘WHY’, for some it may be the desire to play with your kids with energy and strength, or get back to playing that sport you enjoy , or to simply have an abundant life in every aspect of life.

If we value health , being proactive will produce the ability to create new habits that will make us healthier. Pro-activity makes us move toward what we value despite the circumstance presented us. It is not a function of whether we have money or not , whether we have time or not. We choose to be proactive and not reactive to our environment because we value our health more.

How are we supposed to be more proactive in health:

  1. If you work at a desk all day, little changes like standing desks, stretching and exercise breaks improve engagement at work.
  2. Prepping healthy meals for the week and always being prepared with snacks so you do not have to buy unhealthy food.
  3. Exercising at least 20 minutes , 3 times a week for physical, emotional and mental health

The list could go on but the idea is that in the culture of health we are creating , pro-activity is a fundamental principal .

Do we have the knowledge, skill and desire to be proactive about our health?
